LAS CAFETERAS Hailing from Los Angeles, Las Cafeteras are children of immigrants who remix roots music in order to tell modern-day stories with what Los Angeles Times has called a “uniquely Angeleno mishmash of punk, hip-hop, beat music, cumbia and rock.” Their sound is brought to life by an eclectic instrumentation, which includes jaranas, requinto guitars, a quijada (donkey jawbone), a West African bass instrument called the marimbol, a cajón, and a tarima (wooden platform) used to dance Zapateado. Las Cafeteras use music as a vehicle to build bridges among different cultures and communities, creating “a world where many worlds fit.” Las Cafeteras have taken the music scene by storm with their infectious live performances, playing with bands from diverse genres such as Mexican icons Caifanes and Lila Downs, Colombian superstar Juanes, Los Angeles legends Ozomatli, folk/indie favorites Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and most recently with hip-hop artist Talib Kweli.
